WHAT IS ONE THING I'D LIKE EVERYONE TO KNOW ABOUT ME?
I pastored in 3 churches from 1981 to 1991. My family and I started attending COTH in 1992, I left the landscaping business to be a full time associate pastor here in 1994, and became the senior pastor in 2000. I have enjoyed each role in this great church and am courageously following Christ into our future.
HOW WOULD I DESCRIBE MYSELF?
I am as ordinary as men come but I have an extraordinary faith in God. I grew up Catholic believing in God but not loving Him. I wasn't headed in the right direction but God got a hold of me and has given me a great life. I enjoy my family and friends, my hobbies, and my work (it sounds weird to call what I do work because it is so much fun)!
SOME FUN FACTS ABOUT ME ARE:
- Born in South Dakota, raised on motorcycles and hunting with my Dad.
- I was a journeyman cement mason for 9 years.
- Lost a concrete job to attend a professional water ski school.
- I ran a 4:51 mile in high school.
- My dad got me fired once when he thought I was not working hard enough.
- Some say I am passionate about hunting.
WHAT I WOULD LIKE EVERYONE TO KNOW ABOUT MY FAMILY:
Deb (she likes to be called Grace) and I met while in college. I was teaching a Bible study and noticed a gal who needed a little extra discipling. :) Within a month we knew we wanted to get married but we waited 4 months to get engaged, and then married one year later (6/7/1980).
Our son, Danny, has grown up and become a youth pastor at an independent evangelical church in Elk Grove, CA. He married Allison in September of 2008 on the college campus where his mother and I met.
Our daughter, Charissa, has flown UAV's in Iraq and now in Afghanistan and when she is not defending our country she is visiting others. She wants to see the whole world and is on track to do so.
We have a loving bond that keeps us all close, though many miles separate us all. I love my wife nearly as much as I love God and my kids run a very close third behind Deb.
WHY DID I BECOME A PASTOR, AND WHAT IS MY MINISTRY EXPERIENCE?
I became a Christ follower at age 16. My Nazarene pastor, Leonard Edwards, told me God was calling me to be a pastor. I said, "When He tells me, I'll let you know." December 23rd, 1975 I heard an audible voice from God (One of only 2 times in my life) telling me to give Him my occupation. I told Pastor Edwards and he helped me enroll in the fall of 1976 at Point Loma College. I graduated in 1980 and became a Youth Pastor, serving in 3 churches until moving to Oregon in February of 1992. In addition to the 18 years I spent as an associate (Youth, then adults here at COTH), I spent 3 years as an Evangelist. I never wanted to be a senior pastor but God made me do it in May 2000. I'm glad I cooperated with Him.
THE MINISTRIES THAT I OVERSEE AS A PASTOR AT CHURCH ON THE HILL INCLUDE:
I am blessed to lead a tremendous team of pastors here at COTH and it is mainly through them my ministry goals are achieved. God has given me a large task of leading this great church. While I don't get to always be the one 'in the trenches' doing ministry, my fulfillment comes from providing direction to thousands of Christ followers, teaching hundreds of volunteers, training scores of great leaders, all through a team of associate pastors who make doing ministry a true joy here in Yamhill County. |
