Details

Destination: Cusco, Peru.

  • One of 7 geographic regions Extreme Peru is building a support center
  • A cluster support family will guide a team of young Peruvians and young Americans, as they plant dozens of local churches in the Cusco area
  • This is part of a grand scheme to plant 120 churches in a 4 year period throughout Peru.
  • Cusco is an ancient city with modern amenities.
    • Located in south eastern Peru
    • Population 325,000
    • Elevation 11,000 feet above sea level
    • The gateway to Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and much more
    • http://www.cuscoperu.com/ will give you a lot of information

Project: Strive to finish a 3 story house, very similar to the 2 story we did finish in November of 2009.

  • We will be the third short term team to work on this project, that will begin on
    • First team: 2/25/10 – 3/10/10
    • Second team: 4/9/10 – 4/21/10
    • Third team: 8/12/10 – 8/28/10 (All participants must sign up through our church)
  • We would like to complete the structure, but it is not mission critical.
  • The first floor will be the sanctuary. The 2nd & 3rd floors will be identical to the house we finished in Puerto Maldonado in Nov., 2009.
  • An English speaking job superintendent will be on site (Dennis Linnel).
  • We really need a plumber, painter, plasterer, an electrician, a tile setter, and a carpenter.
  • We need workers, helpers, servants, support people, food prep, etc.
  • We can take approximately 30 people.
  • Everyone will have the chance to do construction and/or participate in Impact Events (ministry to people and neighborhoods)
  • http://www.extremenazarene.org/Default.aspx will acquaint you with this mission, although you won’t find our trip listed on the web site, since it is only available to COTH.

Accommodations: A retreat center called ‘Sol de Oro’ in Cuzco, Peru.

  • This place is so nice it has a swimming pool, dining hall, etc.
  • We will learn more as soon as possible, but we have been assured everyone will enjoy staying here.
  • The internet lists a 5 star hotel in Lima with the same name so we are assuming the same people own both places, which is a good indicator.
  • Anyone wishing to stay beyond August 28th may have to change to a different hotel, due to the great group price that makes this place affordable for our team. (To stay later, see ‘Options’ under Date Section).

Dates: 8/12/2010 – 8/28/2010

  • Depart PDX 8/12 (Thursday)
  • Arrive Cusco on Friday, 8/13 & receive orientation to begin Impact and Construction
  • Saturday, 8/14 is a full blown work day, in all arena’s.
  • Sunday, 8/15 is a day for everyone to do something in Impact, all day long.
  • Monday, 8/16 – Saturday, 8/21 are all work days in both construction and impact.
  • Sunday, 8/22 is a day for everyone to do something in Impact, with a restful and fun and maybe touristic Sunday evening for the team
  • Monday, 8/23 & Tuesday morning, 8/24 are work days. Tuesday afternoon is for cleaning and packing. Tuesday night we celebrate our efforts.
  • Wed. & Thur., 8/25 & 26 are for tourism.
    • To visit Machu Picchu will cost about $300 per person
    • Less expensive options include visiting the Sacred Valley, Pisaq, or Calca
    • A wide variety of action / adventure sports is available
    • Sightseeing in and around Cusco is fascinating. $30 rents you a taxi driver for all day
  • Friday 8/27 & Sat. 8/28 will be travel days to get home.
  • OPTIONS:’ You can stay longer in the country, if you’d prefer.
    • To stay and work on the project longer, the Extreme Peru team will arrange for your lodging & transportation & charge you a minimal fee to cover your costs while you are there. You can name the duration there and they will arrange your air travel accordingly.
    • To stay and vacation in the country, Extreme Peru will arrange your air travel accordingly and you will be responsible for your own in-country travel & lodging (they will offer advice).

Cost: $1,990 – adult / $1,890 – age 13-19 / $1,790 – age 6-12

  • The standard cost is $2,290, but we will pay less than that
  • Because we are a sponsoring church (Our church board sent in $7,500 a year ago to sign up as a sponsoring church), all adults get $300 off the standard price.
  • The price listed above is guaranteed from Los Angeles and we may be responsible for travel costs from here to L.A. In the case of the last trip, we each paid just $25 extra due to the great price on air travel the Extreme Peru Travel Agent put together. This can’t be finalized until we have all the names of those going. When we get to that point, the travel agent can begin booking and we will discover what additional costs may be incurred.
  • We will have one organized fund raiser (a Memorial Day Weekend Garage Sale at the church) for this trip, but there is no guarantee any other source but your own pocket will help pay the costs for this trip.
  • There may be some additional health related costs, such as immunizations, incurred as a result of this trip.
  • All or some of the costs associated with this trip may be tax deductible as a charitable donation. See your tax advisor for details on this matter.
  • If you open a ‘Missions and Outreach’ designated fund at COTH in your name, others can donate money to your personal fund. Every dollar donated is for your personal mission travel costs and is a charitable donation for those who gave.

Tourism: Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, and many other options will be available

  • We are building in at least 2 full days of tourism
  • There may also be some time on 8/22 in the evening, and 8/24 during the day to take in some local sights.
  • Machu Picchu is one of the 7 wonders of the world and is a highly recommended sight to take it. The city we are working in is the closest city you can fly into to see this ancient wonder. Translation: You can’t get any closer than where we will be to start the journey to Machu Picchu.
  • For $30 American money you can hire a taxi driver to spend the day with you and take you anywhere you want to go in and around the city. There is a good chance you can get a translator (one of the Extreme Staff, someone in the local church, etc.) to go with you.
  • This is a highly tourist town. There are many tour groups you can hook up with, if you are the adventurist type. Otherwise the Extreme Peru staff will set you up with the local tourist sites you are interested in taking in.
